Place.  You will see there the form of the Spurn Point, how I should think, that a Strong floating Battery & Gun Vessels moored within that Point, would be of the greatest consequence to flank the Ennemy [enemy] as they came in, and by throwing them in confusion have the chance of their being driven on the sands.  Our three Ships are only a defense against Shipping proceeding up the River, for we can do them no injury to the ennemy [enemy] on the Shore, unless by proceeding higher up.  The rapidity with which a determined ennemy [enemy] in force, might proceed up this river, is very great.  In three hours with a fair Wind & Tide, they might, from passing the Spurn be up to Hull.  Gun-Vessels [should] be placed within the Sands wherever they could and they should all have plug holes in their bottoms, that in case the Crew cannot defend them, they may sink them & escape in their Boats .  Such a Town as Hull I think should fit out a few, - it would be very little expence in the manner they might do it, & having a number of Men at their Command - perhaps they only want to have it suggested to them, for these Craft would come to their different uses, when they were no longer wanted for the purpose I am speaking of.
