to lay before you his first Essay as a botanical Author -

          Some Changes have happened in this Establish[mnt]: since my last letter:  Dr. Hare has been permanently appointed to the Charge of the Garden;  but as yet, the Consequent situation of Dr. Wallich, has not been defined. - Dr. W - at present therefore feels many alarms: -  but I think without occasion: -  His Continuance is so essential to Dr. Hare, that without the prospect of securing him in it, I do not think Dr. H - would have Ventured to take on himself, the responsibility, of so important - and, (to him) - rather Novel an Employment.

          The delay in Nominating an assistant of higher Salary than has hitherto been allowed - may arise from want of precedent and other grounds to justify the measure. -  I hope however in a few days to see Dr. Wallich Confirmed as a first Assistant: -  and his future Interest and Merits will I hope secure to this fine Establishment a Man who possesses both abilities and inclination to promote the most desirable end of such an Establishment.

          You will conclude Sir Joseph, from the Manner in which I have Noticed these subjects, that I leave my own views quite out of the question: -  I have thought it Consistent to do so;  -  for, as the change in my rank which, I calculated on happening ere this, is by delay, or Non-arrival of Accounts from home, still in suspense,
