Portsea May 7th 1799

Sir

As the weather is now become mild & the time of our departure I hope drawing near, I beg to submit to you late for it would be advisable to send down the plants to replace those that have died - The time of our departure is not absolutely fixed, but I should apprehend that if any news arrives soon respecting the French Fleets we should not be long, as the 2nd carrier are now gathering at the Northern bank - The garden looks remarkably well as these things that remain alive, are very thriving, as is Mrs Suter [Suttor] and her child - I believe you had the list of things that died some time after - I shall write to Cayley tomorrow to tell him to come down, as I think he should be here now to get himself fixed onboard, & perhaps you will confine the plants to his care to bring down - Coll Paterson came down last Monday, he desired me to present his respects to you, we are anxiously wishing for some news respecting the French Fleet, where they are and what they are about; I hope their safe arrival in some of our Ports will dispel the cloud
