Sydney March 10th. 1801

having sudden opportunity offering of writing to England by way of Calcutta, I cannot let it pass, altho' I have much to write; without, informing you that it is probable I shall be able to write a longer letter which I have no doubt will get to your hands long before this possibly can - The Lady Nelson arrived here safe & sailed the sixth Instant to determine some points which want to be ascertained respecting the Straits, before any Conclusive Chart can be made, I have sent a rough Eye copy of the Lady Nelson & two other vesell track through, they are very safe. As I have sent him documents thereof to the Secy of State & Mr Dalrymple thro' the Admiralty, there is no doubt of your getting a sight of them, which I must wish as also my other dispatches, the substance of which I must have informed you of but thus I have so little time - Cayley is gone in the Lady Nelson - I hope his exertion with be satisfactory - By the Porpoise I received an Admty Commision for the Melissa but as Govr Hunter has taken both these Ships home I have appointed myself to the Porpoise which I hope will be confirmed I thank God I have Cap Grant - Paterson who assists me much is well, I hope he will be confirmd as Lieutt  Govr  from my order to him the day I took The Command  Septr. 20th. 1800
