Soho Square, April 5, 1794.

SIR,

IT having been agreed this morning, by a meeting held at Mr. Secretary Dundas's apartments in Somerset Place, that the adjourned meeting of the Chairmen and Deputies of the Parish Associations in the city of Westminster should be resumed on Thursday next, in order to arrange a proper plan for keeping the peace of the metropolis, in case any advantage gained by the enemy should induce ill-disposed persons to assemble in riots and tumults; and also to decide upon the expediency of raising levies of troops in the parishes, for the defence of the realm, to be commanded by Officers receiving commissions from the King or the Lord Lieutenant, I request you to call a special meeting of the Committee of St. Anne's Parish, to be held on Friday next, the 11th instant, at Eleven o'clock in the forenoon, to take into consideration the plans which shall be recommended by the abovesaid meeting.

I request, Sir, also, that you will cause this letter to be printed, and a copy of it sent with each summons, in order that the Members may be acquainted with the reason of their being called together;  and also apprized that I think it my duty on that day to resign the office of Chairman, it being in my opinion, incompatible with that of High Sheriff of the County of Lincoln, which will oblige me, on the smallest appearance of danger, to hasten down to that County, in order to provide for the peace and security thereof.

I am, SIR,
Your very humble servant,

(Signed)  JOSEPH BANKS.

"To Mr. John Birch,
"Secretary of the Association of St. Anne's Parish."
