is here meant, where in our ascent, the Mercury in the Thermometer was first observed to sink, in the night time, below the freezing point, and which I found to happen, in this tropical region, so low, as 6490-feet which I dare say, will stagger the belief of some Theorists. Vegetation ceased at 10543-feet - the lower Snow was met at 11515-feet and the height of the Mountain is 13634-feet above the level of the Sea but the correction for the Thermometer which is not been here allowed for, may make some triffling alteration.
After a short visit among the other Islands, we quitted the Sandwich Island, about the middle of March, and made Trinity Island, off Kodiak, on the fourth of April, from thence we directed our course along the coast to Cooks River, which we perused to its outmost extremity, and you will no doubt, Sir, be equally surprised as we were, when I inform you that it is only an Inlet of the Sea, similar to many other great Inlet on this coast - falling short, not only, of those great expectations conceived of it, but even, of the extent assigned to it; for it terminates about the Latitude of 61°24' North extending only four or five leagues beyond where Captain Cook's boats left off their researches - hence it can no longer, with any propriety, retain the appellation of River.
