My letter from San Diego California, in December last, by the way of New Spain, I trust, you have received, as it will acquaint you, with the progress of our transactions to that period - I also, had the honour to write you, in the beginning of February last from Owhyhee [Owyhee]; and at the same time transmitted in the Daedalus Store Ship, by the way of New Holland, a box of Seeds, for His Majesty's Garden,which I sincerely wish may arrive safe, & in good condition.
As no interruption took place, during our stay at Owhyhee, of the most friendly intercourse with the Natives, I employed, most part of my time, in different excurtions, to the interior parts of the Island; in one of these I reached the Summit of Mowna-roa tho' not without hardships and great fatigue; I was, however, induced to persevere in this journey, which took upwards of a fourtnight, from having a Portable Barometer, by which, I have been enabled to ascertain, the height of that Mountain with sufficient exactness, as well, as that of the lower line of Snow - the lower of Congelation - & the upper line of Vegetation, there being a series of corresponding observations, made at Karakakooa, during my Absence, & both Barometers carefully compared.
