My Dear Sir
It was with sentiments of gratitude & delight that I received your kind letter of the 23d June. Be assured, my Dear Sir, that I appreciated very highly, those sentences which you had the goodness to express for our deceased friend General Humphreys, as well as the value of your gracious condescension towards his widow. I should have thank'd you long since, had I dared to follow the impulse of my inclination, but I delayd writing, in the hope of informing you of something of an interesting nature regarding the Sea Serpent, which has again visited our Shores during the last Summer, & excited more than ever, a great sensation, especially as several Vessels went out equipped in full preparation to conquer this Monster of the Deep & that great hopes were had that he would be taken.
