Dear Sir,

Perfectly assured of your inclination to serve me, joind to a remembrance of your friendship, for my late patron, Sir Thomas Adams; are not stronger motives for my addressing you, than the pleasure I am confident a mind like yours must receive, from contributing to promote a person, whose only pretensions, are length of service, & an unblemish'd name, such unfortunately, now are my sole dependants.   I have been four months as a midshipman on board the Barfleur, by a recommendation I procur'd to Adml Pye; but as my claim on his friendship is not sufficient to exact preferment, nor have I have that chance of making myself distinguish'd, which a more active station would afford,
