villages etc with Church steeples quiet undamaged. The enemy's line here was close & we were fortunate enough to witness several of his strong points being shelled both by our guns and trench mortars. The trench mortars were firing a new type of shell, about 160 lbs weight, with wings like a torpedo. When fired we could see them quite plainly in the air soaring upwards and then descending on the target. Several direct hits were scored and one I saw apparently landed near a tree as tree & all went up into the air. With the glasses one could see practically everything & places as far as "Menin" could be seen. It was indeed an unique position & we certainly do here hold the dominating position.
