Trenches & elaborate M.G. emplacements all facing the sea.

The railway the Turks built out from Jaffa ends about 4 miles to our front. Thus by laying about 15 miles more (our line is about 10 miles from El Arish) the Egypt to Palestine railway will be complete.
It is extraordinary when one thinks of the vagaries of fortune. Today two men from the 1st Reg. after we had entered the place & everything was quite safe, went bathing & somehow managed to fall foul of a floating mine which had been driven ashore, & were blown to atoms literally. They were both 1st Conting. men.
I believe outside the sea is sown with mines to keep off the monitors who used to come along occasionally & blow hell out of the place.
