22nd. Jan 1917. Attend a Lecture at 10 in Mametz Wood Huts on Courts-martial.
2.15 attend Lecture by Gen Rosenthal on Heavy Artillery & Infantry.
25th. Jan. I report at Bn.Hqrs. at 7.30 am with 20 other ranks. We leave Gap Trench near Flers at 7. Our work is to assist the Anzac Tunnelling Corps under Lieut Ashcroft in making Strong Points.
26th Jan. (Anniversary Day). 3rd. day here in Gap Trench. I am in charge of a party making Strong Points, with directions from Lt Ashcroft, whom I knew in University Scouts.
On 24th I arrived here with advance party to take over Gap Trench & Stores from 45.
