Decr 14 1812

The Commiee [Committee] of P.C. for Coins beg Leave to Remind their the Lordships of the Treasury of the vacancy in H.M. Royal Mint made by the Lamented death of the R.H. Spencer Percival & to move their Lordships to Fill it up.

These places which have been Long united & were held together by the Late incumbent are those of the Surveyor of Meltings & Clerk of the Irons.

The duty of the Surveyor of Meltings is to attend Personaly during the whole time that Bullion is in the melting Pots to witness the Mixture made of the Precious metals with the impure alloy of Base metal, and to see that the proportion is Such as to Produce the proper Standard; to see to watch the melting Pots that the Lids are not Raisd during the Process of melting, Lest additional alloy Should be added, and When the Pots are Emptied to take a Small proportion from Each & having markd & numbered these Portions of metal to deliver them for assay to the Kings assay master.

The duty of the keeper of the Irons is to Receive into his custody all Such Puncheons metrics & dies as are not in use, to deliver out, Such as are wanted, & to be present whenever the great Press for multiplying dies is used & of Course to be Responsible for its not being applied to improper purposes.

These offices are Evidently incompatible with Each other & Cannot be held by the same person without one or the other Concerns being neglected, as the Surveyor of Meltings Cannot be in the melting house and the Keeper of the Irons
