The first duty of every Person who embarks on board a ship Whatever his Station may be, is to Conduct himself respectfully towards the officers of that ship & to Obey as far as he is Able such orders as they may choose to give to him, they will not Call upon every man who is a Passenger to assist in the management of the Ship unless there is real occasion for his help & of this they who are sailors are better judges than any Land men can be. Whenever therefore you are calld upon to assist you must do it readily cheerfully & willingly.
In case you Sail in the Same ship with Mr Smith your business in the outward bound passage will be to Obey his Directions in taking care of the Plants Committed to his charge, by doing this you will not only do good Service to the East India Company at whose expence you are victuald during the voyage but you will also learn the art of taking care of Plants at sea in which he has great experience.
When you arrive at Calcutta you are to Continue your assistance to him in the Companies Garden of which he is appointed Gardiner & to Obey such directions as the superintendant of the Seed Garden or Mr. Smith shall give you during your stay in India.
The Principal business for which you are sent out is to take charge of such Trees Shrubs & Plants as shall be sent home for his Majesties use in the Ship on board which you are placd & of them you will have the sole management & direction during the homeward bound passage.
You will therefore Employ yourself whenever you have it in your Power & your Principals the superintendant & the Gardiner of the Companies Botanic Garden will chiefly Employ you in collecting such wild Plants or the seeds of them as are not to be found in Kew Gardens & in Planting them & such others of the Companies Garden as are to be sent to EnglandĀ
