I have been able to make from my pay does not exceed £650 which is in the four per cents - I have also due to me about £400 for the Sale of my effects previous to my leaving the Island: To which may be added the valuation of my private Stock of Sheep & Goats amounting to £652 which I left for the use of Government - The whole of which amounting to about £1700 I can assure your Grace in the fullest extent of truth is every farthing I am posessd of, excepting my pay, to support my wife, 4 children & an aged parent - I should not have presumd to trouble your Grace with this account of my private concerns, but that I consider it a duty I owe to his Majesty's Service & myself to submit that Statement to your Grace's notice -
The situation I stand on the List of Commanders, is so high up, as to preclude any chance of my Name being included in the general promotion. My not having served immediately in the Navy, during the last nine Years, I hope will not be an objection to my obtaining additional Rank in the Service I have spent so great a part of my life in: And in which it has ever been my ambition to rise in - But, as I have even considerd it my bounden duty, to serve his Majesty in any situation that my Services might be thought useful, I trust it will so far appear to your Grace, that I have faithfully & honestly dischargd the Trust reposd in me for the last nine Years, that any impropriety I may fall into in humbly requesting your Grace's influence in my behalf to obtain the Rank of Post Captain will be excusd from the Motives that has inducd me to request this mark of your Grace's approbation of my conduct, if I should be so fortunate as to appear deserving of it.
I have the honor to be with the utmost respect & deference,
My Lord,
Your Grace's
most devoted
and obedient Servant
Philip Gidley King.
