far from opposing your Orders under any other view but what I conceive strictly my duty I declare that an Officer who would act from private resentment is unworthy the Name of an Officer;  you have repeatedly accused me publickly [publicly] of being an unaccommodating Man to a Person who has it in his Power to serve me so much as you might have - also in a former Letter alluded to my large Family.  I am confident an opposition to your wishes is not the way to obtain favors, but Sir the line of Service is in my opinion strait, and any Officer who would depart from it to serve his private Interest is unworthy to hold a Commission in His Majesty's Service - and I here most positively declare that every opposition I have made has been founded on what I conceive the Rules of His Majesty's Naval Service and not from any other motives.

          Having thus far explained myself, let me Sir for the Honor and good of His Majesty's Naval Service request you, as I find it is your determination to assume the Command of His Majesty's Ships by any means which you may think proper, to return yourself from leave when the Service will go on, as no impediment can be thrown
