fixd it was agreed that his Extra time should be at his own disposal & that he flattered himself with the hope of considerable Emoluments from his experience in the trade of suggesting Remedies for the infirmities of the numerous fire engines with which London now abounds
Since he has enterd upon his office however, very far from confining himself to the Duties of superintending the machinery, he has in fact superintended & assisted with his advice & his manual Labor almost every department in the office, he has in truth been the Animating Principle which his Great experience in Boltons mint enabled him to be, he has Remedied a multitude of Defects, without him I am Confident the business could not have been put into motion, & without his continual aid it would even now in my opinion very soon come to a stand # [See Page 3]
Your Lordship well knows how assiduously I have attended to Lawsons feelings on all occasions & how constantly I have urged him to give his assistance in Every department as there is not one in which his experience at Birmingham has not made him able to be highly usefull
The article of multiplying dies the most interesting as well as the most dificult process in the mint is what he is Peculiarly versed in, it was his chief Employment at Birmingham, he has taught the mint officers all the improvements they know on the subject & is now continualy complaining that they do not do that business so well as he knows it ought to be done
The Clerk of the Irons (dies) is an office immediately connected with that department he has the Custody of the dies of course & claims to inspect & observe upon them & to see to the perfectness of articles under his care, he is anxious for the appointment more I am convinced in the hope of Gaining Consequence among the officers by being
