additional Expence Estimate at no more than £3125 - with two more houses of a Smaller size for the Engine men whose are Presence within the walls in Case of Fire is of the very greatest importance #
The allowances for the 4 workmen in Lieu of houses is for 3 of them £35 each & for the other £25 making together £130 if to this we add the so necessary accommodation of the Engine men we cannot but admit that the Saving made to Government in erecting these houses will very nearly Cover the Expence
# The Presence of the Four workmen must also in the case of Fire be of the utmost importance to the chances of Preserving the building, but the cheif Reason for being at this Particular time very desirous of Receiving them into the Enclosure of the Mint, is, the danger of their being tempted by Persons whom they may meet in their Quarters to Leave their Present Situation; as Long as Trade was interrupted & wages low there was no fear of their being seduced away, but now that wages begin to increase we cannot be too Carefull in keeping these men from temptation, they are in truth the Soul & vitality of the Mint with them the whole can be Carried on & would be carried on much Cheaper & better Could the managers be preventd from interfering, but without them the managers would be unable to continue any one of the operations in which they now assist, they are indeed workmen of the first Rate Skill as could scarcely be Replaced were they to be Lost
