There is no good anchoring place all round the Island & the bottom is excessively foul as the Spaniards had two Cables cut in less than 48 hours. They only remaind at it five days, at the expiration of which time they went in quest of the [space with feint indecipherable words] 38º [grs.not degrees, in the original Spanish] - which they did not find & went then to Chiloe

Davis [or Davids] Island is about 600 leas. distant from Callao & about the same distance from the main-land of Chili. -

[The island referred to was Easter Island which is 3512 km (632 leagues) from the coast of Chile]
