by astronomical observation and to record all such in his Journal with minute exactnes in case he is so fortunate as to discover a River of Considerable size as he is likely to do between the Latitude of 21 & 27 South, and also in the Bay of Carpentaria, you are to order him to navigate up the same as far as the Lady Nelson can proceed with safety, Carefully Planning the Course & the Banks of it & noting the Soundings as he proceeds & to land as often as he sees reason to suppose that any considerable variations be taken place either in the productions of the Country soil, or the Customs of the inhabitants & he is to examine the Country as far inland as he shall think and also to observe the variation of the needle & the right direction & course of the tides & currents
