Shepheards hotel was near by. At Shepheards Hotel Hd. Qr. thrived. In front of Shepheards Hotel was placed a guard of Manchester Territorials to protect the hotel from the Australians who had not the slightest intention of going near it as events proved for (perhaps you have never seen a Manchester Territorial – he's a very nice little chap but as a guard for that purpose ludicrous) they did not do it. Of course this does not excuse the original rioters neither can anything excuse the slouching gait, dirty dress, disreputable appearance and general very bad manners of many of our troops in Cairo but there again the fault is with the officers who should have
