How can I reconcile this when Captains every day I have been at The Admiralty have had an interview with Lord Chatham, - His Lordship not seeing me is certainly a slight whatever he may have of doing it away. -
A few days before the Ship was paid off I had the honor of a Visit from the Duke of Clarence, who was pleased to pay me some high compliments, and to invite me to dine with him at Richmond - before dinner he asked me if I had seen Lord Chatham, and if he had introduced to the King. I told him I had not seen Lord Chatham, altho I had often attended, His Lordship being so much engaged, but that I had had the honor to be introduced, by you, to His Majesty - He was glad to hear that (he said) but exclaimed - here is an officer that has acquitted himself in the highest manner, and the First Lord of The Admiralty would not see him. - You will suppose I introduced no conversation. - His Royal Highness requested I would give him a Copy of My Maps, but I have had such a severe illness in my Eyes, it has prevented my writing or reading but with great difficulty. -
My Lord Chatham's conduct only affects me upon account of my officers, it would have given me pleasure to have seen that they had met with the reward they expected & which I really think they merited. I meant, had I seen his Lordship, to have offered my Services which my
