In giving the tracts of my routes I do not profess the part of the artist. My grand point is accuracy. What I here present you has been obtained nearly from my own application, without a teacher, and is founded by the mere dint of practice. When I first began to travel, I considered it almost impossible to keep within 2 points of the given route, as I could not fix upon an object that exceeded a few hundred yards, & in many places not above 20. Upon such an opinion, when I first engaged in a journey, I was uncertain when I should return, but to my surprise I made no variation! However, though I had been so fortunate, I could not credit it as a rational fact, but considered it as the offspring of chance. But experience has since told me to banish the last thought, for in all the journies that I have made, whether long or short, and though ever so crooked or zigzag, I have never varied above ½ a mile. In travelling with a compass there are 2 things which should be well understood, and one only to be learned but by practice & perseverance.
