Remarks &c. on the Western Port in H. M. A. Colonial Vessell Integrity by Acting Lieut.t C. Robins of Hell Ship Buffalo.

The Entrance into the Western Port is wide & Safe for a Ship of any Draft of Water, either to Sail or Work in.  If Sailing with a leading Wind & being abreast of the West end of Philip Island, or the little Island that lays off it, giving it a good Birth NE & ENE per Compass with a little Variation, on the Course up the Port, Observing that from the Main run off extensive Sand Rollers, which are very dangerous in the Night time, as 12 Faths is close to the edge of them, but there is a Channell of 2 or 3 Miles between Philip Island & them of 14 & 16 faths.

In the day time the Breakers on them will be seen but they may at all times be avoided by keeping Philip Island on board, which Island may be approached within ½ a Mile in 10 faths having run up to the Eastward, until the Passage up the Port to the Northward, between the Main & the West point of Western Island is open & having brought a Sandy Point of the Main to bear about N by W. & the West Point of Western Island about N. N. E. you may then anchor in a good Roadsted in 10 & 14 Faths Water, here there is Room for any Number of Ships, but a good deal of Sea comes in with a Westerly Gale, you will then be abreast of the Watering Plan found by the Lady Nelson, in 1802 & said to be a fresh Spring, however I cannot recommend it for we found it brackish

From this E N E by Compass will lead you 7 or 8 Miles further up the Port, Observing that off the West Point of Western Island, angles off a Muddy flat
