received a sacrifice in proportion to its dignity. In these dreadful trials when stokers seem like mad children playing with the fire of hell, it is inspiring for some of the more thoughtful to feel that those who guide and direct have not shrunk from "noblesse oblige."
I cannot write to you as a personal friend, as I have but a light acquaintance with you; but be assured I do not forget that all the consolations of a philosopher do not mitigate the sufferings of a father.
