Lady Sinclair at Spithead

January 6th 1806

Sir

This day my Secretary on returning on board from Portsmouth brought me a Letter dated 23rd Ulto. which he got yesterday by accident on enquiring after the Master of this Ship at the Butcher's Shop where he deals for Provisions:  he afterwards saw you and you told him you had left a Letter there for me,  I therefore suppose the Letter alluded to was sent from the Admiralty to Admiral Montague who sent it to the Porpoise as directed;  but under all circumstances I felt much surprise and astonishment at the way, and at the late period to which I have received it;  the Seal being defaced and the Letter burnt as if there had been an attempt to open it.   Should any Letters be sent to the Porpoise for me in future, I request you will be pleased to take them under your charge and send them to me by a Boat from the Ship in the care of a proper Person.

I am
Sir
