Fortune at Sea
March 6th 1806

My dr. Sir

     I am as much surprised as yourself & a little hurt, that Captain Short should construe what I told him into a complaint - the reason of my telling him - was to know if he had given any orders relative to my station in the Convoy, supposing he might have desired you to inform me of it, which at the time I thought irregular - for I certainly felt a little hurt when the Mate came down to me & informed me the Sinclair had hailed.

     But never had the most distant idea of making it a cause of complaint particularly as I thought you was not on deck at that time of night - consequently it could be your orders.  I therefore put it to the Officer of your Deck & I believe told Captain Short so - had I known Captain Short meant to have made any use (more than information) he most certainly should not have had any
