Dear Sir,

As the Colony of New South Wales, seems to be growing into importance, and as its present state is I believe little known in England, I am in hopes that the accompanying sketches, will not be entirely unacceptable to you, when your leisure permits you to look over them.  The publisher wished much to have them united to the Calcutta's voyage, but the Descriptive part I thought too incomplete, and upon the present regulations of the Colony, I was afraid I had remarked too freely for publication.  Should I again visit the Colony I trust I shall be able;  to acquire a more comprehensive, and connected knowledge, both topographical and civic, for I am firmly of opinion that it will become of infinite consequence to this country, both in a commercial and a political point  of view.  The
