Sir
According to your request I sent you a set of Bills. If the place designed for the Garden in the Sydney is not upon deck, * the plants will not be so healthy as would be wished, during the great length of time they will have to remain on board if it goes to the Derwent but as the ship is uncertain of returning to Port Jackson it must take its chance. It is requisite so far as this for me to go with it; the colony does not afford a person to any knowledge that is acquainted with this branch of horticulture, exclusive of what I hinted to you before. After all the pains that has been taken in collecting the plants, and then to entrust them to those that are unacquainted with the culture, is very galling. On the other hand leaving my other collection behind would be highly improper, for in the space of twelve months it would be devoured with insects. And if ever I get upon English ground, it will be uncertain if my coming here again. In two months I could obtain what I wanted of my desiderata of this country, so that I could leave it without ever wishing of coming to it any more. I have informed Sir Joseph about the Garden, & that I was inclinable to return with it myself. But I must beg of you to tell him, that I have altered my mind in not going to the Southwest in the Buffalo by way of Norfolk Island. I thought there had been 6 empty boxes, as I am deceived in this, there will be no occasion of sending 2 up here.
I remain your &c.
