Vicar's Hill near Lymington

25th Sept. 1771

Dear Banks

As you meditate a second Voyage I have a few words to say on the Subject   I think it pity before you ever set out at all that Application was not made to the Courts of Madrid & Lisbon acquainting them with the Design of the Voyage & devising Instructions might be sent to all to all their Governors to give all possible Assistance to yr Inquiries, you may perhaps think this would serve only to increase their Jealousy, I am of a different opinion & as you could so easily now (whatever may have been the case formerly) produce Credentials from Government, I think such Application would be by far the more likely, if not the only Method to answer [indecipherable] in its full extent but this is by way of Hint only to which I must add another at least as essential, I think it will be madness to venture such a Voyage a second time with a single Ship only   [my idea?] of a voyage round the World are as little formidable
