Although His Excellency has behaved with every degree of attention to me since my arrival (indeed more than I could have expected) I cannot help declaring that a more active & a more determined person is wanted in this Colony for their Governor. The price of the Necessarys of Life is beyond any thing ever heard of & I am certain has given rise to complaints construed into Trading and dealing with convicts. It is well known that there is no money in the Country & those who have been convicts are the people that bring articles to market. At present mutton is two shillings a pound. Rum is sold out of the ship that I came in at £4.4 per Gallon. Servants wages is £50. a year besides his victuals & every thing in proportion.
