that by indefatigable assiduity I should be able, whilst forwarding the great object of the voyage, to collect such a mass of Materials as would be no less important to the Public, than useful to myself in the subsequent period of my Life.  On this hope alone depending for remuneration I always conceived & do still conceive to think it would be extremely imprudent to subject them to the chance of being seized by some paltry corsair on our return.  The risque it is true may not be great, but I cannot think myself justified in exposing to it the produce of three years labour with all the consequent mortification & disappointment.

I beg pardon for detaining you so long.  If a passport be obtained I shall be most eager to devote myself to the undertaking, but without it it is impossible I can proceed with satisfaction to myself.
