Director, May 17th 17898
Yarmouth Roads

My Dear Sir

We arrived on the 14th, but were not long at anchor when an account was brought to Admiral Onslow that the Admiral who we had left out at the sea, had gone a ground on Hammonds Knowl, & in answer I was sent to assist her - fortunately by starting the water & throwing overboard some stores, the ship got off, and I had happily no other business then conducting her safe back into the Roads, were [where] we anchored for Tuesday evening.  She new makes 9 ins. of water an hour.

I hope that the ships & vessels we have taken will be felt severely by the enemy - by following it up, I am confident, will bring them to their senses.  Their fleet in the Texel are certainly not yet fit for sea, or can they put their threat of Invasion into execution on this side of the Thames, indeed I do not think it will happen any where on our coasts, because the French cannot now expect success in such an undertaking.
