May 17 1796

Dear Sir

After dayly [daily] expectation of being ordered to sea for this month past, I am at last under the command of Vice Admiral Macbride and on the eve of sailing. Since he took the command we have been delayed by the Russian Squadron that is to go with us not being complete in their provisions, and I have my doubts, altho under orders, whether we shall get away before Thursday or Friday if the wind will permit us.  Admiral Duncan is expected in, but we have no accounts of him since the 10th when he was left cruizing on the Doggerbank. The Coromandel is arrived under Tiny Masts that now make the signal to go into the harbour.  Admiral Macbride has his flag on board the vessel and our order of  Battle which was given out yesterday is as
