Director in Yarmouth Roads

Sept 16th 1796

My Dear Sir

I have the pleasure to inform you of our arrival at this place, and to assure you that the Squadron have done all in their Power to bring along with them the one belonging to Holland. No doubt from very good reasons, they preferred lying at Anchor to The Texel Road to meeting us. I was sent in to observe their motions on the 12th, and there was them lying with sails bent, and apparently ready for sea, nineteen sail of Ships and three Brigs. We cannot say positively, but I believe there are twelve Ships which will be ranked in their line, some of these however I take to be Two Deckers made up for the occasion, & not regularly built, - their Frigates seem to be large.  Our Cruize when we left Yarmouth was to have been but for ten days and in consequence every person laid in a small sea store, you will therefore believe we are glad to get into Port. One of the Russian Ships has a number of sick, and I understand the squadron in general have some in the scurvy. I am fortunate that our sick list contains only six & only one with scurvy, but I consider
