I have called petals would have taken the same Colours as the future Blossoms. I however do not entertain a doubt but that in their first incipient formation they were Leaves; & so I am well satisfied in the ordinary Course of nature are all petals.  I had the pleasure to shew you some years ago every progressive Change from five Leaves to beautiful Pear Blossoms, in which the points of those Leaves formed the divisions of the Calyx.  In double Flowers, (the poppy is an example) Stamens appear to be converted into Petals, as it is not uncommon to see an anther on the Head of a petal - the same thing often occurs in the Rose, or in Fact changes of one organ into another are so common in the vegetable world, that I consider the differences between Mr Browne & myself are merely verbal.  The Threads which on some of the plants resemble stamens were wholly without anthers.  If I have ever occasion to mention either those or the supposed Petals, I shall  simply state Facts, having no Hypothesis to defend.

Very sincerely yours
