"are those which Bouvet says are like 'Ducks and swim like a Seal: in his Voyage I must allow he gives a true Account of many things: I saw nothing remarkable in the Lat.e of 54=44 South from the Longe : of 11=12 West to 3=26 West but Penguins & Snow and frosty & thick foggy Weather: Octr. 2d we saw the first-piece of Ice in in 53=51 South Lat.e & 2=38 W. Longe : from Greenwich: the Wind here is variable never lasting more than sixty Hours at one point of the Compass as I have experienc'd. I run down my Longitude from Cape Circumcision to Bristows Island from the Lat.e of 49=33 to 53=9 South and saw nothing but Penguins & Weeds".
He says he has nam'd the Island Enderby. Captn. Lindsay has written another Person and in the Letter says the Island is about [space] but does not give the Lat.e or Longe : -- By the above extract you will perceive he does not acquaint us with the Lat.e or Longitude, or give any description of the Island; all he has done is to prove the existence of Bouvets Discovery which I suppose will prove satisfactory to the French Nation: as soon as I receive any Chart on particulars of the positive situation of of the Island I will forward them to you. I believe Mr. Lindsay fully competent to lay down the exact situation of it, as he has been a Master of a Man of War and has two very good time Pieces with him: the Discovery as a commercial speculation has provd most disadvantageous to us having fail'd in the Seal Fishery, but as both Vessels were fitted for a two Years Voyage and as our Letter of Instructions in case of failure in getting Seals at Bouvets or Bristows Island directs that they are to wait the next Season and then proceed to Sandwich Land and endeavour to find Seals somewhere about the North Eastern part of the Land. We have no Letters from Captn Hopper
