Sir

Tho' by the situation which I am in, respecting the following matter, I may in one sense be said to be sailing between Scylla and Charibdis [also spelt Charybdis], yet I am in hopes after your consideration of the Subject, I shall be able to steer clear of both.

The natural inclination of endeavouring to get a livelihood by my profession, for a large Family is a sufficient inducement to my bringing an Action against one of your quondam Officers, for false imprisonment, attended with the additional aggravating circumstances of indecency. and cruelty.

But as it is necessary that your name quatenus High Sheriff must be made use of upon this occasion, I feel it in a double light incumbant upon me rather to bring the same prior to acquainting you therewith.  Or to do so provided I shd incur giving the least offence, for the speed not observe to you Sir Joseph that no High Sheriff can suffer any expence for the ill conduct of his Officer and that if I dont there are Attorney "enew who so bring the Action, yet as I sensible of being under obligation" to you on several Accounts, for a many years past, Was I not to apprize you so before
