Greenwich Decr 24th 1800
Sir,
Since my letter to you of yesterday, in answer to yours of the 22d, I have seen Mr .Crosley, who looked very well & said he thought his health competent for the voyage, and should be ready if he should be called upon. Therefore we shall not be at a loss if Mr. Linley should remain too long undetermined, or declined the business. As to the principal instruments, we have in the wharehouse a fine Sextant made by Ramsden for Mr Dawes's use, when he went to Port Jackson, & two time-keepers made by Arnold for the use of the late Mr Gooch; but the only one made by Earnshaw (for the same voyage) was delivered to Mr Whidby & is on board the Sans-pareil. As it seems expedient to have some of Earnshaw's as well as Arnold's, I asked Earnshaw, if he had any ready; and he answered he had not, but could get two ready in a month, which I desired him to do accordingly, & which I hope you will approve of, & will I suppose be time enough for the voyage. I should have been glad to have met you on this business, but as I understand you are going into the country for a short time, it may be deferred till your return.
I am, Sir, your most obedient Servant
N. Maskelyne
