Greenwich Decr 23 1800

Sir,

I have received your notes of 12th & of yesterday's date.  On the receipt of the first, I wrote to Mr Linley to inform him of the contents & to ask whether he could not determine about undertaking the voyage without waiting for the return of Mr Zimmerman, his father in law, from Hamburgh, who was to leave that place on the 15th of this month.  They are partners in the Hamburgh trade, & reside, usually, one here & the other at Hamburgh. I called on him last Sunday, when he told me he could not give an answer till the return of his father in law, whom he expected every day.  I told him I would endeavor to keep the appointment open for him, but could not answer for it, but hoped he would go.  He is to write to me, as soon as Mr Zimmerman arrives.  By way of precaution I wrote to Mr Vince to sound Mr Chapman, fellow of Caius College,
