Feb. 18. 1801

Sir Joseph

I have the satisfaction to inform you, that my commission as commander of His Majestys sloop Investigator, came down here this morning, and for which, Sir Joseph, I feel myself entirely indebted to your influence and kindness. Panygeric [panegyric] or a long train of sentences of gratitude, would be unpleasant to a mind like that of Sir Joseph Banks, I will therefore only add, that it shall be my endeavour to shew by my conduct and exertions that your good opinion has not been misplaced.

As the first favour after this great act of kindness, I have to request of you, Sir Joseph, that on your first interview with my Lord Spencer, you will be kind enough to thank him for me, for the promotion which he has been pleased to give me.
