My Dear Sir
When I first heard of the proceedings of the Lincoln Goths, I most sincerely prayed that the Spires might fall upon, and crush this wost worse than barbarian Sacrilegious Chapter, Dean and Bishop, to atoms: they are a Scandal to the Nation, worse than Thieves of any Description, and I trust you will make a Motion at the Antiquary Society, that such of them as have, unfortunately to us, got into the Society, be expelled, were I in Town, I actually would make the Motion. - At St Asaple [?].
The Tythes of a Parish have been appropriated for the Reparations and Improvements of the Cathedral: the Choir was almost new built, in Bishop Shipley's Time, when all the Monuments, and Grave Stones, were removed (and now cover a part of the Broad Isle as a Pavement, and if it had not been for one of the Vicars coming, accidentally, into the Church, the Stone Cutters were beginning to chip off all the Inscriptions) except one, which belonged to the late Sir Edwd: Lloyd, and he and the Bishop being at variance, he would not let the Monument be taken down. The Chapter threatened to do it by Force, and Sir Edward threatened Doctors Commons, in short, there the Monument now remains. The Bishop as Archdeacon, by Act of Parliament, has a Seat and Voice in the Chapter: the Tythes I have mentioned are but of small Value, but are suffered from Time To Time to accumulate, and their Value, Annually, put out at Interest by the Chapter
