[Page 2]

Sir

I take the Earliest opportunity of answering your Letter of the 30 Ult. which Came to my hands yesterday & shall be happy if any information I can give you Either at present or in Future may tend to promote the success of the usefull reform in which your Public spirit has induced you to engage yourself.

The business of high Sheriff is Conducted here in as economical a manner I believe as in any Courts of Law Extant in England.  The Judge requires 20 Gavelin men & 6 Servants Footmen and 2 pages in the high Sheriffs Livery the Bailiffs & [indecipherable] are all the attendance requird usual.

The Sheriff is not permitted by the Custom of the County to Entertain any Gentlemen who attend the Assize on the two days at when the Grand Jury are dine at what is Calld the high Sheriffs Table. Everyman pays his own Sheet [?].

No resolutions therefore or recommendations therefore have as Far as I am acquaintd been enterd into or orderd & no County Livery has been adopted.

The only Fee receivd by the under Sheriff from the high Sheriff is 2s. 10 as a recompence for his Journeys to London for on account of Sueing out the Questions &c.

An attorney resident in the Town of Lincoln has by using the name of his clerk as I am informd frequently exercised the office of under Sheriff for several proceedings.
