lately unfixed my attention to another part of natural history - animal gradation, I have dropt at present, all thoughts of the subject. I also send by the same consequence what other things I have collected during the expedition, which I am sorry to think are so imperfect and so little worth your acceptance.
As I have taken up my abode in India from several, and, I hope, very rational natives; and as I shall strive by all means to be kept employed in the interior, for the sake of my favourite pursuit, there may be opportunities of collecting various knowledge should ability keep pace with my inclination. If your extensive knowledge would offer a few suggestions to guide me in the way, there will be a greater probability of my succeeding; at any rate, they would make me more daring in the attempt.
In the enclosed paper are a few desultory remarks and observations which, if they convey but little information, may serve to convince you that I have already in some degree attended to your wishes.
I have one request, Sir, to make in the way of solicitation, which nothing but the consciousness of your well known liberality would make me hazard. I am appointed assistant surgeon on this establishment, until the determination of the Court of Directors be known.
