Sir,
It is with pleasure I inform you that I have just received the case of paper which came in the Porpoise. It is in better condition than what I expected as I am told she was a very wet ship. The writing paper has received some damage, for a specimen of which see the present sheet, which is a chosen one of the best.
For the want of paper I have suffered much, during the time I was in want of it I applied myself in making a garden, for if I was not in possession of a few vegetables I should be awkwardly situated as the ration from the stores without the like would not be a maintainance. Unfortunately a few days ago we had the greatest flood that has been known in the Colony which has done considerable damage, I myself have been a small sufferer, by having my Garden destroyed. In the few necessary articles that I want I can scarcely get supplied with. Nay it is fortunate for me that I could work before I came here, otherwise I should have been still worse of than which I am at present but I may say I should have been still more fortunate, if I was master of all the trades that stand in need of articles for I have lost more time in striving to forward them than what I could make them in, and I can positively say, that I have applied for as few things as possible. The house that I now live in, was 4 months in fitting up, and £5 in England will do as much, including the materials and workmen's labour, for future, in the few articles that I shall want such as packages &c, if they are done in the time I require, I will get get them made elsewhere, and pay for them out of my own pocket, for I am certain I can gain more
