[Page 1]

Sir

By not knowing whether the present letter, will be quickly communicated, causes me to write only a few lines. I sent two letters directed to you by the Porpoise, but as she has been wrecked, I cannot tell whether they are safe or not.  Since I wrote them I have got two good skins of 2 species of small kangaroos; the larger one is called by the Natives Bet'ongthe smaller Wer'raThis last has its tail ending in a slender tapering point, and slightly curled upwards.

I expect shortly to get some other distinct species, & the 2 other animals that you so much want.  There has lately been brought to the Governor & the Col. Patterson, some animals that have long been talked of.  They are called (by the natives where they are caught) Co'la.  The spring is now commencing very fast, & I shall shortly visit the Blue Mountains. After the normal shrubs have done flowering I mean to go a long journey, merely on the purpose to say that I have been farther inland than any other person. I shall engage 2 men to go with me, and shall spare neither trouble nor expense in endeavouring to compleat this idea that has so long been the object of my mind.  I shall set of from Richmond
