I have always been backward in applying for a hand to go up rivers, as then I should not have had any fear of being bewildered, and could have put into the most likely places.  This is what I should like much to have done, but for to gain such indulgence, I considered as unpleasant, too expensive, & in some instances might lay me under some disagreeable obligations, all these taken together put  a stop to such intentions.  At present I see no prospect of remaining here, unless I could make some very long journey into the interior; but these are easier planned than executed, for they cannot be done without expence, & undergoing great and violent fatigue.  To do this requires bodily strength, fortitude of mind, & great prudence.

For want of time I cannot send the account of some other journies, which I much wished for to have done.  In the one to Mount Banks, I do not expect to be altogether credited, for what was undergone & seen, can only be known to those which went the above journey.
