[Page 3]

Had we put into Plymouth I understand it would have been a much cheaper place to have remained at, but as for Portsmouth it is a place that I never wish to see again. It is now the wrong time of finding any plants except the minutiæ. At the present I am at a loss how to act. I imagine Gov. King will not wish to proceed to sea in the Porpoise any more. During the gale four sail foundered. If a person was made of money, and let him be as careful as possible, he could not avoid exhausting it if he remained here, unless he followed some employment. However I am willing to act as you think proper. Devonshire I am told is a famous county for a Botanist, if you think there is any thing that might be discovered there that you are not in possession of, I can easily go from here by water. Excuse the errors that I have made in the letter as well as its bluntness, for a person could scarce write one in a more inconvenient place, as we are put in such a confusion.

I am Sir with the greatest
regard & esteem your truly
humble & obedient servant
G Caley
