[Page 3]

It is thus that I have reasoned.

It gave me concern to observe in Dr Blanes letter to you that my interference had given offence.  This was still more evident in the conduct of his Colleague Dr Johnstone when here.  I shall not trouble you with particulars; I am not a stranger to undeserved reproach, and have received it for actions of my life on which I chiefly reply for the high consolations of an approving conscience.  I send you a copy of a letter to Dr Blane.  I saw the prisoners at a season of peculiar distress, and the impression made on my mind gave an undue warmth to some of my expressions which I pray you to forgive. That I could have no motive of an improper nature, no intention of bringing any imputation on government is sufficiently evidenced by the person whom I addressed.

We are establishing a Botanical Garden here, & a collection of natural history on the subject of which I shall perhaps beg leave to trouble you for a little advice.  Accept my thanks for your kind attention.

I have the honour to be Yr [your] very respectly. [respectfully]

James Currie
