I must entreat your Forgiveness for entering into a few Particulars of my Situation.
By my long and protracted Residence abroad, to which I was forced by the Importance of the Offices I held in New South Wales, I found on my Return, that I had lost the opportunity of returning to the Line in which I had been bred, and applied to the Duke of Portland to relieve me from so distressing a Situation, by naming me to some Appointment under Government. His Grace most attentively heard, and favourably received my Application - declared himself convinced that I was deserving of some Remuneration for my Services, and on my suggesting that I should deem the half of my Salaries some Recompence for them, allowed that I might enjoy them until something better could be done for me.
If Sir Joseph Banks would so far condescend as to mention me to His Grace, I have every Hope that my Wishes in that Particular may be gratified.
I have lost my rank, Sir, in the Service - I am now only on Half-Pay as a Captain of Marines. I am unemployed - a Situation that I must view with Regret, while I feel myself capable of serving my Country, I hope I may say, as ably as many who
